Opening soon (a dramatic new addition to the revitalization of Lower Manhattan) the Sports Museum of America is the first of its kind, an 80,000 square foot for-profit attraction-museum dedicated to celebrating the history and significance of sports in America. Through contractual partnerships with virtually all single-sport halls of fame, museums and organizations across North America, the attraction celebrates, under one roof, utilizing inspiring artifacts, films and engaging interactive exhibits, the beauty and meaning of sports. SMA will also be the new permanent home of the Heisman Trophy and annual presentation, and the first women's sports hall of fame, the Billie Jean King International Women's Sports Center. The Museum was founded with $100 million provided by public and private sources, and includes board members such as Doug Flutie, Patrick Ewing, Jason Kidd, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, and Mary Lou Retton.
Summary of major responsibilities:
This position is a unique opportunity to learn aspects of creating and running a successful new museum/attraction, including marketing, sales, public relations, government relations, artifact acquisition and preservation, finance, legal, etc.
Some of the areas that interns will assist in include:
Administrative tasks (organize office, filing handle incoming and outgoing mail and phone calls, book travel arrangements, etc.)
Research various sports and business topics
Work with individual senior staff and museum Founders on specific projects
Attend meetings, as appropriate
(Interns will take on more significant responsibilities after exhibiting strong performance)
Requirements/qualities necessary to perform the responsibilities:
Ability to work effectively in an intense, fast paced environment
Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to multi-task
Extreme attention to detail and a drive for constant perfection
Technologically proficient - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), internet research, etc. - and a willingness to learn necessary new technology
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and personable with strong telephone skills
Self-starter with an intense work ethic
An enthusiastic team player with a dynamic personality
Creative problem solving capabilities
Bright, hardworking, motivated, and an extremely quick learner
Tenacious and believe that "no task or challenge is impossible"
